VPX stage

Orca is the pioneer in Spain to use the VPX technology.

Unified shooting environment

LED panels surrounding the set provide versatile lighting, reflecting and illuminating in real-time. Serving as the main light source, they adapt to camera movements and sun position. An iPad app controls color and scene parameters, creating a dynamic and cohesive visual experience.

Sets as supporting roles

Strategic practical elements give the eye an anchor point between real actors and the virtual background, smoothing the integration and making the most out of the real-life reflections produced by the LED volume.

Full control of the weather and lighting conditions

Lighting effects for the stage can be instantly altered, enabling seamless transitions between various times of day and weather conditions. We empower gaffers to have full control over on-set and virtual lighting, offering limitless creative potential.

Parallax

Fully digital sets react in real-time to moving cameras and scenes, selling the illusion of depth, so the canvas isn’t limited to the physical display anymore. VP allows for full camera freedom.

One set, multiple locations

Our system allows for rapid switching between locations and worlds, enabling directors and DoPs to scout and plan scenes virtually. This streamlines physical production, eliminating the need for travel between multiple locations and reducing costs.

Green screen without green skin

Our advanced chroma keying technique selectively applies green color to the camera-visible section of the LED walls, while maintaining the natural scene colors for reflections and color spill on the actors. This represents the next level of chroma keying.

Orca Studios’ first VPX soundstage is located in Madrid, offering a full-featured environment for virtual production, with its cornerstone being the LED volume that features a high resolution 100 m² curved wall, showing 1000nit HDR images perfectly calibrated towards each camera sensor, and a set of accessory LED screens for real-time environment lighting that go up to 6000nit.

This environment is highly customizable and connects to our real-time camera tracking and rendering systems, allowing for everything from shooting regular plates to complex 3D environments that respond to the camera motion while surrounding the actors and props.

In addition to the LED environment, the Madrid stage is a completely equipped facility for film and TV productions, including parking space and three floors of dressing, makeup, and meeting rooms.

In Barcelona, we also have the option to shoot in a similar stage if needed, but either in Barcelona or Madrid or somewhere else, we are able to move to any desired location and build customized screens that suit all your needs.

OpenVPCal

Open-Source screen-to-camera calibration for Virtual Production LED Volumes.
Developed by our VFX/VPX supervisor Adrian Pueyo over the last 1.5 years in Orca with Francesco Luigi Giardello at Netflix, the tool is currently in a beta state, being tested in select stages around the world before getting public.
